EUTYCHIAN, Pope, Saint. - By the anonymous author of the Liber Pontificalis he is called a Tuscan, the son of a certain Marinus. It is not possible to establish exactly the chronological limits of his pontificate (275-83?), which, however, must be placed during the forty-year period that preceded the persecution of Diocletian, that is, in a period of peace, so that the report that he buried a great number of martyrs must be considered suspect.
A decree is attributed to him by which he ordered that only beans and grapes be placed on the altar to be blessed; but this report seems to have to be connected with the heresy of the Manichaeans, who asserted that legumes and wine proceed from the principle of evil, from which they also abstained at Mass. The documents relating to the pontificate of E., if there were any, must have perished in the persecution of Diocletian. He was buried in the cemetery of Callistus, where De Rossi found his epitaph, but his martyrdom is not proven. His feast is celebrated on December 8.
