EUTROPIO, SANTO

EUTROPIUS, Saint. - Born in Marseille to a noble family in the first half of the 5th century. He spent a rather dissolute youth, but after the death of his wife he was brought back to better sentiments by Bishop Eustachius.

Ordained deacon, he devoted himself with enthusiasm to penance, praying much and fasting often. On the death of Bishop Justus of Orange he was elected to succeed him. He was already bishop in 464, since he is mentioned in that year in a letter of Pope Hilarius. He was also in correspondence with Sidonius Apollinaris. He was succeeded by a certain Verus, who wrote his biography. He is commemorated on 27 May.
