EUTROPIO, saint. — Born in Marseille of a noble family in the first half of the 5th century. He led a somewhat dissipated youth, but after the death of his wife he was led back to better sentiments by Bishop Eustachius.
Ordained a deacon, he devoted himself enthusiastically to penance, praying much and often fasting. Upon the death of Bishop Giusto of Orange, he was elected as his successor. He was already a bishop in 464, since he is mentioned that year in a letter of Pope Ilaro. He was also in correspondence with Sidonius Apollinaris. He was succeeded by a certain Vero, who wrote his biography. He is commemorated on 27 May.
