EVARISTO, PAPA, SANTO

EVARISTUS, Pope, Saint. - The reports concerning his pontificate are uncertain or false; he did, however, govern the Church between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd century (97-105).

The anonymous author of the Liber Pontificalis calls him a Greek, born in Bethlehem to a Jewish father. He is said to have distributed the priests of Rome among the various urban tituli and to have established that seven deacons should assist the bishop during the sacred liturgy. Pseudo-Isidore attributes four decretals to him. The report that he died a martyr and was buried in St. Peter's is also doubtful. According to the martyrologies and the testimony of Eusebius, the day of his death can seemingly be fixed at October 26; but the year remains unknown.
