Evaristus, Pope, Saint. — The information regarding his pontificate is uncertain and unreliable; however, he governed the Church between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd century (97-109).
According to the anonymous author of the *Liber Pontificalis*, he was Greek, born in Bethlehem to a father named Giudo. He is said to have divided the presbyteries of Rome among the various urban titles and established that seven deacons assist the bishop during the sacred liturgy. The Pseudo-Isidore attributes four decretals to him. Also doubtful is the news that he died a martyr and was buried in St. Peter's. The day of his death seems to be established, according to the martyrologies and the testimony of Eusebius, as October 26; but the year remains unknown.
