EVANSVILLE, DIOCESE of. – City and diocese in the United States of America, State of Indiana, established by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution Ecclesiae Universalis of 21 October 1944.
The diocese comprises the following twelve counties: Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Pike, Posey, Spencer (except for the city of Harrison), Sullivan, Vanderburgh, Warrick. It has an area of 5,010 square miles and numbers 394,725 inhabitants, of whom 56,085 are Catholics (1949). It has 65 parishes, 80 diocesan priests and 17 religious priests, three men’s religious communities, including the abbey of S. Meinrad, and six women’s religious communities; five High Schools and 40 elementary schools: in 1946 there were 321 conversions. The diocese is a suffragan of Indiana; the Cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary Most Holy.
