FABIUS, Saint. - Martyr under Diocletian in 303 or 304. According to the Passio (BHL, 2818) composed between the end of the 4th and the first half of the 5th century, when the governor of Mauretania convened the concilium provinciale, in the wake of the imperial edict of persecution, F., its standard-bearer (verillifer), refused to take part in the ceremony, declaring himself a Christian. Placed in prison and interrogated, he confirmed his faith, was beheaded and on 31 July buried in Cartenna, his homeland.

In the Passio, according to P. Franchi de' Cavalieri, the episode of the dispute between the Christians of Cartonna and those of Caesarea, who claimed his body after the peace, was added later.

The martyr is not commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology, but under 31 July in that of Ado, as now in the Roman Martyrology (p. 314).
