FABIO, saint. - Martyred under Diocletian in 303 or 304. According to the Passio (BHL, 2818), composed between the end of the fourth and the first half of the fifth century, when the governor of Mauretania convened the provincial concilium following the imperial edict of persecution, F., his standard-bearer (verillifer), refused to take part in the ceremony, declaring himself a Christian. Imprisoned and interrogated, he confirmed his faith, was beheaded, and on 31 July was buried at Cartenna, his native city.
In the Passio, according to P. Franchi de' Cavalieri, the episode of the dispute between the Christians of Cartonna and those of Cesarea, who claimed his body after the peace, was added later.
The martyr is not mentioned in the Hieronymian Martyrology, but appears on 31 July in that of Ado, as now in the Roman Martyrology (p. 314).
