Depositio Episcoporum

DEPOSITIO EPISCOPORUM. - It is a liturgical document included in the so-called Chronographer of the year 354 (v.). It contains a list of the dates of the depositions of the bishops of Rome from Lucius I (254) to Julius I (352), with an indication of the place where the liturgical station was celebrated.

The short list is in calendar order from Christmas, that is, from 27 Dec. (Dionysius 268) to 8 Dec. (Eutychian 283). Marcellus is missing, but at the date of 16 Jan., known from the Liber Pontificalis, Marcellinus is indicated instead.

The compilation of the text can be fixed during the brief pontificate of Pope Mark (Feb.-Oct. 336) because it was added after Eutychian, followed then by Julius.

The topographical indications prove to be extremely exact for the discovery "in (coemeterio) Callisti" of the sepulchral inscriptions of Lucius, of Eutychian and of Gaius; for the latter the date of the deposition also coincides (22 Apr.).
