DEPOSITIO EPISCOPORUM. – This is a liturgical document contained in the so-called Chronograph of the year 354 (v.). It contains a list of the dates of the burials of the bishops of Rome from Lucius I (254) to Julius I (352), with an indication of the place where the liturgical station was celebrated.
The brief list follows the calendar order from Christmas, that is, from 27 December (Dionysius 268) to 8 December (Eutychian 283). Marcellus is missing, but on the date of 16 January, known from the Liber Pontificalis, Marcellinus is indicated instead.
The compilation of the text may be dated to the brief pontificate of Pope Mark (February–October 336), because
it was added after Eutychian, followed by Julius.
The topographical indications prove entirely accurate, as shown by the discovery «in (coemeterio) Callisti» of the funerary inscriptions of Lucius, Eutychian, and Caius; in the case of the latter, the date of the burial (22 April) also coincides. Enrico Josi
