DEPOSITIO EPISCOPORUM. — This is a liturgical document included in the so-called Chronography of the Year 354 (v.). It contains a list of the dates of the depositions of the bishops of Rome from Lucius I (254) to Julius I (352), with an indication of the place where the liturgical station was celebrated.
The brief list is arranged in calendar order from Christmas, i.e., from 27 Dec. (Dionysius 268) to 8 Dec. (Eutychian 283). Marcellus is missing, but on the date of 16 Jan., known from the Liber Pontificalis, Marcellinus is instead indicated.
The compilation of the text can be dated to the brief pontificate of Pope Mark (Feb.–Oct. 336) because it was added after Eutychian, followed then by Julius. The topographical indications prove to be extremely accurate due to the discovery in the (catacomb of) Callistus of the sepulchral inscriptions of Lucius, Eutychian, and Caius; for the latter, the date of the deposition (22 Apr.) also coincides.
