DIANO-TEGGIANO, DIOCESE OF. - In the province of Salerno, residence in Teggiano (ancient Roman municipium).

It has an area of 100 sq km with 90,000 inhabitants, of whom 89,070 are Catholics; it has 49 parishes and 180 churches served by 80 diocesan priests and 18 regulars; it has a diocesan seminary (1948). It is a suffragan of Salerno.

The diocese was established by Pius IX on 21 Sept. 1850; yielding to the requests of the king of Naples Ferdinand II, the Pope fixed in Diano the residence of the bishop of Capaccio and the diocese took the name of Capaccio and Diano; shortly afterward, however, Capaccio was separated and united to the diocese of Vallo (v.). In 1882 the diocese of Diano assumed the name of D.-T. The cathedral is the church of S. Maria Maggiore.
