Praised by St. Gregory of Tours as a man of piety wholly devoted to prayer and penance, in 346 he was already bishop of Tongres, since in that year he adhered to the decisions of the Council of Sardica in favor of St. Athanasius. In 350 he was sent as legate to Constantius on behalf of the emperor Magnentius, and on that occasion he met with St. Athanasius in Alexandria. Strongly attached to the Nicene faith, he took part in 359 in the Council of Rimini, where with a few others he managed to stand up to the mind of the Arians backed by the prefect Taurus; deceived, however, by a treacherous snare of Ursacius and Valens, he finally consented to sign the Homoian formula of the Council. The date of his death is unknown, that of 384 having no foundation. In the 6th century his body was venerated in a church built in his honor at Maastricht.
