SERGIUS I, POPE, St. – Dream of St. Sergius relating to St. Hubert, by Roger van der Weyden (c. 1450) – New York, Friedsam collection.
These are his declarations condemning the racial laws. In the last months of his life, his concerns for the fate of his country and his beloved people, together with illness, hindered his activity. One of his last writings was the Pro memoria on the validity of the Regent’s abdication, a matter of great importance in the evaluation of acts of State, presented to the Supreme State Council, of which S. was a member. He died as Russian troops were occupying his see, and the Russians who entered the Primatial Palace to conduct a search found only his corpse.
