LEO II, Pope, Saint. - In 680-81 the Sixth Ecumenical Council had been held in Constantinople, which condemned Monothelitism and the imprudent adherence of Pope Honorius I to the letter of the patriarch Sergius.

The brief pontificate of Leo II, elected in 681, consecrated on 17 Aug. 682 and died on 3 July 683, was devoted almost exclusively to securing acceptance in the various ecclesiastical provinces of the decisions of the Council, whose acts he himself, through his expertise in both languages, had translated from Greek into Latin. Under him the schism of Ravenna, exacerbated especially in 663 by the emperor Constans II, was definitively closed with the regularization of the bishop Theodore. In Rome, he transferred to the church of St. Bibiana the relics of the holy martyrs Simplicius, Faustinus, and Viatrix. Feast on 28 June.
