LEONE II, POPE, saint. - In 680-81 the Sixth Ecumenical Council had been celebrated at Constantinople; it condemned Monothelitism and the imprudent adherence of Pope Onorio I to the letter of the Patriarch Sergio.
The brief pontificate of Leone II, elected in 681, consecrated on 17 Aug. 682, and d. on 3 July 683, was devoted almost exclusively to securing acceptance in the various ecclesiastical provinces of the decisions of the Council, whose acts he himself, owing to his proficiency in both languages, had translated from Greek into Latin. Under him the schism of Ravenna, exacerbated especially in 663 by the Emperor Costante II, was definitively ended through the regularization of Bishop Teodoro. In Rome, he transferred to the church of S. Bibiana the relics of the holy martyrs Simplicio, Faustino, Viatrice. Feast on 28 June.
