ETHEWOLD, St. — Bishop of Winchester,
b. ca. 908, d. 1 Aug. 984. At first a monk at Glastonbury
under St. Dunstan, ca. 954 by the will of King Eadred he was
made abbot of the monastery of Abingdon, in which he revived
religious discipline. In 963 he was elected bishop of Winchester
and was consecrated by St. Dunstan, with whom he collaborated
in reforming the decadent ecclesiastical discipline, especially by
rebuilding churches and monasteries devastated by frequent Danish
raids, and by the education of youth, supported by King Edgar,
with whom he was on intimate terms.
A splendid Benedictionary (liturgical book) written at his order
while bishop of Winchester is preserved (cf. DACL, II, cols. 735-39).
