EVANSVILLE, DIOCESE OF. - A city and diocese in the United States of America, State of Indiana, created by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution *Ecclesiae Universalis* of 21 Oct. 1944.
The diocese comprises the following twelve counties: Davies, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Pike, Posey, Spencer (except the city of Harrison), Sullivan, Vanderburgh, Warrick. Its area of 500 square miles has a population of 394,725, of whom 56,085 are Catholics (1949). It has 65 parishes, 80 diocesan priests and 17 religious priests, three male religious communities, among which is the abbey of St. Meinrad, and six female religious communities; 5 high schools and 10 elementary schools; in 1946 there were 321 conversions. The diocese is a suffragan of Indianapolis; the cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
