FALGONI, Juan, Venerable. – Mercedarian, b. at Fiñana in 1596, d. in 1638. He was a professor at Segovia and Alcalá.
In his writings *Cartilla para saber leer en Cristo*, *Vida de Dios*, *Memento de la Misa*, *El pan nuestro de cada día* (all posthumous; for editions cf. Dudon, pp. ix-xi), F. postulates, in the impossibility of meditating, the contemplative method; total resignation to the will of God can replace the rational method. Accused of belonging to the sect of the Alumbrados, he had to clear himself of the charge in 1629. The writings of F. enjoyed immense success among the quietists of Spain and Italy; of the *Alfabeto per saper leggere in Christo* there are editions from Lecce 1660, Rome 1665, 1660, 1680.
On 1 April 1688 the following Italian translations were condemned by the Holy Office (in addition to the earlier *Alfabeto*): *Lettera scritta ad una figliuola spirituale nella quale l'insegna il più puro e perfetto spirito dell'orazione*; *Lettera scritta ad un religioso in difesa del modo d'orazione in pura fede da lui insegnato*. Probably the Italian translations were placed on the Index not for their doctrine in itself, but for the danger that a false reading might foster the spread of quietism in the second half of the 17th century.
