N. at Scarperia di Mugello 4 June 1754, d. at Florence 25 May 1825. He taught mathematics and philosophy first in the Seminary of Florence, then in the Scuole Leopoldine and was a member of the Accademia della Crusca.
He wrote: Dei proverbi toscani; Osservazioni sul Decamerone; Lezione sopra alcuni luoghi della Divina Commedia; he edited the works of Lorenzo il Magnifico, of il Varchi, of Cavalca, of Simone Sigoli. Gifted in satire, he composed tales in verse and the heroicomic poem La treccia rubina. A fine Latinist, in the Carmina and in the Linus pastoralis he also left versions of some hymns of the Church and the poetic paraphrase of the Dies irae, the Evangelii della domenica and the first lessons of the year, as well as pastoral works for Christmas. His major work is the Favole (Florence 1807), composed for pedagogical purposes—the F. was called the Christian Aesop—in which, in the pure Mugellano dialect, he reveals his finest qualities as an educator and poet.
