Institute founded in Montréal in 1843 by Msgr. Ignazio Bourget and Mrs. Marie Emmélie Eugène Tavernier, widow Gamelin, for the assistance of the poor. They run hospitals and nursing homes, children’s asylums, orphanages, dispensaries, etc. Approved by the Holy See in 1900, they now have 125 houses with 3,552 religious.

v. SISTERS OF MERCY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL

Religious congregation founded in Zagreb in 1856 by some sisters who came from the house at Zannos (Bressanone), belonging to the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul, whose name they retained while constituting themselves as an autonomous congregation. The sisters devote themselves to the care of the sick in hospitals and private homes, as well as to the instruction and education of children. Approved by the Holy See in 1930, the Institute numbered in 1942 over 2,000 sisters in 140 houses, spread throughout Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria.
