FIUME, IONAZIO. — Dominican bishop and polemicist, b. near Aversa in 1621, d. in Naples in May 1694. A religious in Naples, professor and finally regent of the Studio of S. Maria della Sanità, he counted among his disciples the future Dominican cardinal F. T. Howard, whom he instructed in how best to refute the errors of the Lutherans and Calvinists. Appointed bishop of Polignano (23 June 1681), he retained the simplicity of religious life and distributed his revenues to the poor.
He left an extensive treatise on theology: Schola varians adverzus mendacia Lutheri, Calvini et protestantium eretta, I, Napoli 1675; II, ivi 1677; III, ivi 1680; IV, ivi 1688.
