THEODORE-AUGUSTE FORGADE. — Born at Versailles on 2 March 1816, died on 12 September 1885. Ordained priest on 16 March 1839, he was appointed professor of philosophy at the major seminary of his diocese. On 2 October 1842 he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions in Paris and on 14 December of the same year he departed for the Far East, where he first served as procurator in Macao and then went to the Ryū Kyū archipelago in the hope of entering Japan, where persecution was raging. On 27 March 1846 he was named Apostolic Vicar of the newly erected vicariate of Japan and was consecrated at Hong Kong on 21 February 1847. As he was unable to enter Japan, he returned to Europe in 1852, resigned his office as Apostolic Vicar, and on 13 September 1853 became Bishop of Basse-Terre (French Antilles). On 18 March 1861 he was transferred to the see of Nevers and finally, on 21 March 1873, was appointed Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence.
