FORBIN-JANSON, TOUSSAINT de. - b. 1 Oct 1634, d. 24 March 1713. Bishop successively of Digne (1658), Marseilles (1662), and Beauvais (1679). As extraordinary ambassador to the Diet of Poland he promoted the election of John Sobieski. In 1682 he subscribed to the propositions of the Gallican clergy, which were later retracted.
He was created cardinal on 13 Feb 1690 by Alexander VIII, first with the title of St Agnes outside the Walls, then of St Callistus. As ambassador of Louis XIV to the popes Innocent XII and Clement XI he worked to settle the controversies between the French court and the papacy. In reward for his services he received from the king the office of Grand Almoner (1706).
