Forbin-Janson, Toussaint de

FORBIN-JANSON, TOUSSAINT de. - Born 1 Oct. 1634, died 24 March 1713. Bishop successively of Digne (1658), Marseille (1662), Beauvais (1679). Extraordinary ambassador to the Diet of Poland, he favored the election as king of John Sobieski. In 1682 he subscribed to the propositions of the Gallican clergy, which he later retracted.

He was created cardinal on 13 Feb. 1690 by Alexander VIII, with the title of St. Agnes Outside the Walls, then of St. Callixtus. Ambassador of Louis XIV to the pontiffs Innocent XII and Clement XI, he strove to settle the controversies that had arisen between the court of France and the papacy. In reward for the services rendered he received from the king the office of grand almoner (1706).
