FORBIN-JANSON, TOUSSAINT de. — Born on 1 October 1634, died on 24 March 1713. Successively bishop of Digne (1658), Marseille (1662), and Beautvais (1679). As extraordinary ambassador to the Diet of Poland, he promoted the election of Giovanni Sobieski as king. In 1682 he signed the propositions of the Gallican clergy, which he later retracted.
He was created cardinal on 13 February 1690 by Alexander VIII, with the title of S. Agnese fuori le mura, and later that of S. Callisto. Ambassador of Luigi XIV to Popes Innocent XII and Clement XI, he worked to resolve the disputes that had arisen between the court of France and the papacy. In recompense for his services, the king appointed him grand almoner (1706).
