FÜRSTENBERG, Wilhelm Egon von. - Cardinal, b. 2 Dec. 1629, d. in Paris 10 Apr. 1704.

A counselor of the archbishop-elector of Cologne Maximilian Henry, he worked, together with his brother Francis Egon, in favor of French expansionism. Bishop of Metz (1663), of Strasbourg (1682), he was created cardinal on 2 Sept. 1686 by Innocent XI, under pressure from Louis XIV, with the title of St. Onuphrius. The opposition of the Pope and of Emperor Leopold prevented him in 1688 from succeeding Maximilian Henry. Banished from the Empire and forced to withdraw to France, he received from Louis XIV the abbey of St-Germain-des-Prés.
