FOIX, GASTON de. - Duke of Nemours, b. in 1489 to John of Foix, Viscount of Narbonne, and to Marie d'Orléans, sister of Louis XII, d. at Ravenna on 11 April 1512.

At the age of twenty-two he received command of the French troops engaged against the "Holy League" promoted by Julius II. In February 1512, by lightning-fast movements, he succeeded in driving the Spanish army back from Bologna (5 February) and in retaking Brescia from the Venetians (19 February). On Easter day of 1512, near Ravenna, in a most bloody battle, he defeated the Spaniards, but, while pursuing them, met his death on the field.
