PHILIP THE GOOD, Duke of Burgundy. - B. at Dijon on 30 June 1396, to John the Fearless and Margaret of Bavaria, d. at Bruges on 15 June 1467. Founder of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

The murder of his father at Montereau (1419) drove F. into an alliance with the English which, for 16 years, placed the Kingdom of France in grave danger. By the Treaty of Arras (1435) Charles VII recognized the independence of F. within his states, which came to include the Franche-Comté, the towns of the Somme and a large part of the territories that currently constitute

Belgium and the Netherlands. The long peace he preserved and the protection he granted to the arts earned him the epithet "the Good."
