PHILIP OF CAMPELLO. - Franciscan of the 13th century, born at Campello sul Clitunno, near Spoleto. A tradition founded on a brief of Innocent IV dated 10 July 1253, addressed to F. as «magistro et praeposito operis Ecclesiae S. Francisci», makes him the architect who succeeded friar Elias in the direction of the works of the basilica of St. Francis at Assisi, which he would have brought to completion.
Moreover, on account of stylistic affinities with that church, the basilica of St. Clare (1257) in the same city and the churches of St. Francis at Gualdo Tadino and at Terni and that of St. Simon at Spoleto are attributed to him. F. would therefore be one of the first cultivators of art among the Franciscans. But this tradition was shaken by Venturi, who called into doubt the very qualification of architect attributed to F., seeing in him a simple «spenditore» or «economico». The controversy that arose from this has not brought sufficient elements for a conclusive clarification; nevertheless the traditional opinion still meets with the favor of many.
