CAMPELLO, POMPEO. - Minister of State, b. at Spoleto on 5 Feb. 1803, d. there on 22 June 1884. In 1831 he held the command of the civic guard and took part in the insurrectionary movement; he was later president of the provisional government of Spoleto. After the failure of the movement, he was arrested by the Austrians and imprisoned in Venice, from which he soon emerged through the intercession of his father-in-law, Prince Ruspoli of Vignanello. When Pius IX established the Council of State in Rome, C. represented Spoleto there, and in June 1848 he was appointed minister of arms. On 6 Aug., during the Austrian invasion, he published, without authorization, an ardent proclamation urging the people to take up arms. Compelled for this reason to resign, he was nevertheless recalled to the ministry in Nov. After the fall of the Roman Republic, he tried to flee, but was arrested again and could scarcely obtain permission to take refuge in Corfu. After various vicissitudes he managed to get to France. In 1860 he returned to Spoleto, and the following year he was appointed senator and minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rattazzi cabinet, a post he held until 1867.
To C. is due the contrived diplomatic attempt aimed at exacerbating the Roman question over General Dumont's inspection of the legion of Antibes in the service of the Pontiff; as well as in good part the vain effort to prevent, against the spirit and the letter of the convention of Sept. 1864, the intervention of the imperial troops to protect the domains of the Holy See in the autumn of 1867.
