EUGENIUS VULGARIUS. – An ecclesiastical figure who lived between the end of the 9th century and the first half of the 10th. In Naples he taught grammar and rhetoric, perhaps spent some time at Montecassino, then went to Rome where he lived as a penitent monk. He died shortly after 950, but the place of his death is uncertain.
Around 907 he intervened in favour of Pope Formosus in the controversy over ordinations, writing the dialogue *Super causis et negotio Formosi papae* (PL 129, 1103–12, though under the name of Auxilius) and also the *De causa Formosiana libellula* (first edition in E. Dümmler, *Auxilius und Vulgarius, Quellen und Forschungen zur Geschichte des Papsttums im Anfange des X. Jahrhunderts*, Leipzig 1866, pp. 117–99). Some poems and letters by E. also survive (in MGH, *Poet.*, IV, 1, p. 406 ff. and E. Dümmler, *op. cit.*, pp. 139–56).
