EUGIPPIUS. - Christian writer of Late Antiquity, born in the second half of the 5th century, mentioned as still living in a letter of 533. He was one of the disciples of St. SEVERINUS, apostle of Noricum, who in 482 transferred the body of their master to various places until they settled (492) at Castelletto Lucullanum near Naples (modern-day Pizzofalcone), where the Saint received an honorable burial.
From there, E., having become abbot, maintained relations with illustrious figures of the time, such as Bishop FULGENTIUS of Ruspe and the Roman deacon PASCHASIUS. To the latter, in 511, E. sent a well-documented account of the life of his own master, Severinus, asking him to expand it into a full biography. But Paschasius urged E. to publish the *Life of Severinus* himself, just as it was. Inspired by fervent admiration for the ascetic, E. embellished the narrative with a marvelous account of a great number of miracles. Modern scholarship, however, values the work especially for the information it provides on the culture of the period—so scarce in other sources—and on the migrations of peoples, which appear in the background. For the purpose of popularization, to disseminate, by limiting and clarifying, the vast thought of Augustine, E. compiled a collection of 348 excerpts from the Saint’s works, of varying length, dedicating them to the Roman PROBA. He places particular emphasis on passages concerning charity (Letter 167 and Sermon 350).
A rule written for his monks has been lost. Eugippius’ work is mentioned by Cassiodorus and Isidore.
