MARGHERITA of Bavaria, Blessed. — Duchess of Lorraine, born in 1373 to Robert III, Count Palatine of the Rhine, later Emperor of Germany (1400), and to Elisabeth of Hohenzollern-Nürnberg; died at Sierck on 27 August 1434. She married in 1393 Charles II, Duke of Lorraine (d. 1431), who neglected and abandoned her. In her suffering she was sanctified under the guidance of Adolph of Essen, prior of the Carthusian monastery of Marienfloss, which she had founded near Sierck.
Phenomena of bilocation are attributed to her, especially during the battle of Champignuelles (1407). After becoming a widow, she devoted herself entirely to works of charity. She was buried in the collegiate church of St George at Nancy. She had been a friend of St Joan of Arc and of St Colette, whom she assisted in founding the Poor Clares at Pont-à-Mousson. The Rev. Rader calls her blessed.
