MARGHERITA del S.MO SACRAMENTO, venerable. - Carmelite mystic, in the world Marguerite Acarie, b. in Paris on 6 March 1590, d. there at the Petit Carmel in rue Chapon, on 24 May 1660. Daughter of Barbe Avrillot or Mme Acarie (v. beata), she entered the Carmelites of the Faubourg St-Jacques (Paris) on 15 Sept. 1605.
“She will go further than her mother,” Fr E. Binet (v.) said of M. Nourished by the works of St Teresa and by the spirit of the De imitatione Christi, she always aimed at hiddenness. Her spirituality was strong and simple. God manifested M.’s holiness through the gift of prophecy; Richelieu himself had her questioned by Cardinal De Bérulle before undertaking the siege of La Rochelle. She predicted, in particular, the death of St Giovanna F. de Chantal. At the beatification process of Mme Acarie, her mother, the Marquise de Maignelais declared: “Mother M., her daughter, is even holier.” Fr De Vernon extracted from her letters and spiritual notes: Conduite chrétienne et religieuse selon les sentiments de la vén. mère Marguerite (Paris 1641).
