RADER, MATTHÄUS. - Jesuit, philologist, and historian, born at Innichen (Tyrol) in 1561, died at Munich on 22 December 1634.
He entered the Society of Jesus in 1581 and taught for 22 years the humanities and rhetoric in various colleges, deepening his studies of Greek and Latin to such an extent that he earned the praise and esteem of the most celebrated philologists of his time.
He published editions of ancient texts, accompanied by commentaries and sometimes translations, including: Q. Valerii Martialis, Epigrammaton libri omnes (Ingolstadt 1602); Acta S. Oecumenici Concilii octavi (ibid. 1604); Viridarium sanctorum ex Meneis Graecorum (3 vols., Augsburg 1610-14); Opera omnia s. Johannis Climaci, with a translation from the Greek (Ingolstadt 1614); and he produced the editio princeps of the Chronicon Paschale (Munich 1615); Q. Curtii Rufi, De Alexandro Magno historia (Cologne 1617). In the historical-hagiographical field he published: Bavaria sancta (3 vols., Munich 1615-1624), from which the Bollandists drew material; Bavaria pia (ibid. 1628); De vita Petri Canisii libri 3 (ibid. 1614).
