RAMIÈRE, HENRY

Professor of philosophy and theology at the scholasticate of Vals, then of philosophy of law and theology at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse. His principal merit was to have inherited from Fr. Gautrelet the Apostleship of Prayer in 1861 and to have developed and spread it throughout almost the entire world, especially through the *Messager du Sacré-Cœur*, which he founded that same year and directed until his death. He attended the Vatican Council as theologian to the bishop of Beauvais and published in Rome a *Bulletin du Concile* (36 issues: 16 Dec. 1869–20 Aug. 1870), in which one can follow the controversies surrounding infallibility, which he vigorously defended in various apologetic writings. He contributed many articles to the periodical *Études*, of which he was director from 1870 to 1873, against liberalism, and to other periodicals on current topics. His best works remain those publications on the League and the devotion to the Sacred Heart: *Les espérances de l'Église* (Toulouse 1861); *L'Apostolat de la prière* (ibid. 1859), which went through many editions, always improved and widely translated; and the three posthumous volumes drawn from his articles in the *Messager* and edited by Fr. E. Laborde: *Le mois du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus* (ibid. 1890); *Le Cœur de Jésus et la divinisation du chrétien* (ibid. 1891); *Le règne social du Sacré-Cœur* (ibid. 1892).
