RAMIÈRE, HENRY. - Jesuit, theologian, b. at Castres (diocese of Albi) on 10 July 1821, d. at Tolosa on 3 Jan. 1884.
Professor of philosophy and theology at the scholasticate of Vals, then of philosophy of law and theology at the Catholic Institute of Tolosa. His chief merit was that he inherited the Apostleship of Prayer from Fr. Gautrelet in 1861 and developed and spread it throughout almost the whole world, especially through the Messager du S. Coeur, which he founded in the same year and directed until his death. He attended the Vatican Council as theologian to the bishop of Beauvais, and published in Rome a Bulletin du Concile (36 issues: 16 Dec. 1869–20 Aug. 1870), in which the controversies concerning infallibility, which he vigorously defended in various apologetic writings, may be followed. He contributed many articles against liberalism to the periodical Etudes, of which he was director from 1870 to 1873, and to other periodicals on topical subjects. The best of his works remain his publications on the League and devotion to the Sacred Heart: Les espérances de l'Église (Tolosa 1861); L'Apostolat de la prière (there 1859), which had many editions, increasingly revised, and many translations; and the three posthumous volumes derived from his articles in the Messager and arranged by Fr. E. Laborde: Le mois du S. Coeur de Jésus (there 1890); Le Coeur de Jésus et la divinisation du chrétien (there 1891); Le règne social du S. Coeur (there 1892).
