GREGORIAN REVIEW. - Monthly periodical, established in Rome in 1902 under the direction of Monsignor C. Respighi, Father A. De Santi and the maestro R. Casimiri, in compliance with the brief of Leo XIII (17 May 1901) to the Abbot of Solesmes.The purpose was to promote knowledge and the serious and accurate study of Gregorian melodies and thus to cooperate in their return to the sacred functions. A review not of high erudition, but of popularization and practical utility, it offered studies on the melodies, liturgical notes, a complete bibliography of publications concerning the liturgy, essays on Gregorian chant and on accompaniment music in church, and news of the movement for the restoration of sacred music. It suspended publication at the end of 1914.
