RASSLER, CHRISTOPH. - Jesuit moralist, b. at Constance on 12 Aug. 1654, d. at Rome on 16 July 1723.
After many years of teaching philosophy, dogmatics and above all moral theology, he was called to Rome as general reviser of books and prefect of studies at the German College. In the great controversy over the lawfulness of the use of probable opinions he upheld and defended a moderate probabilism in the work: Controversia theologica tripartita de recto usu opinionum probabilium, in confutation of the work of the general Tirso González; but the censors prohibited its printing; nor did he, however much he insisted, succeed in obtaining permission to publish it; only after the death of the general (it seems, however, that already printing had begun at Dillingen in 1693; but it was interrupted and the work did not appear) he was able to develop his ideas in another work: Norma vecti (Ingolstadt 1713), which constitutes his principal work. In it he appears inclined toward equiprobabilism; but on this account, contrary to the assertion of Astrain, followed by Pastor, he cannot be considered its founder.
