MARGARET, Saint. - Much venerated in antiquity and in the Middle Ages as one of the helper saints (v.) and particularly by women in childbirth. She is commemorated by the Greeks on 17 July under the name Marina, and by the Latins on the 20th, under the name M. and as a martyr of Antioch. The accounts of her life and her martyrdom are uncertain and obscure; probably [she suffered] during the persecution of Diocletian.
The Passio, highly fabulous, is linked to a series of legendary writings having as their main character a martyr Pelagia of Antioch. - See plate V.
