MARK OF JERUSALEM, Saint. - He is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on Oct. 22 as a martyr, but this designation of his is not established; in antiquity he had no cult at all and was inserted into Ado's Martyrology.

He was the first bishop of Jerusalem after the distribution of the city that took place under Hadrian. In 135, in fact, the Jews, who had repeatedly attempted to shake off the yoke of Roman domination, led by the demagogue Bar Kokhba, rebelled once again; but they were defeated near Bethar and scattered. It was then absolutely forbidden for them to set foot in Jerusalem, which became a Roman colony inhabited only by pagans. The Christian community too, composed until that time of converts from Judaism, was dispersed, and little by little it was able to reconstitute itself with elements coming from paganism; of this new community M. was indeed the first bishop. Nothing is known of his activity; he seems to have died under Antoninus Pius, in 156.
