FÜRSTENBERG, Ferdinand von. - Bishop and German poet, b. at Bilstein on 21 Oct. 1626 into a noble Westphalian family, d. at Münster on 29 June 1683.
Private chamberlain to Alexander VII, with whom he had friendly relations since the time of the Congress of Westphalia, he carried on in Rome from 1655 to 1661 a notable historical-literary activity, which he continued afterward as well, collecting sources of national and medieval history. In 1661 he was elected prince-bishop of Paderborn, in 1678 also of Münster, and in 1680 he was likewise appointed apostolic vicar for the missions of the north. Pious and generous, he took great care for the instruction and spiritual formation of the clergy and the people, had numerous churches, colleges, monasteries and institutes erected, and established a special foundation for the missions of northern Germany, China and Japan.
His poetic output was also much appreciated by the scholars of his time.
