FURRINA AND FURRINALIA. - Goddess, respectively, and festival of the Roman religion. The festival, which appears in the most ancient Roman calendar (25 July), and the special priest (Ramen Furrinalis) demonstrate the very ancient age of the cult. Outside Rome it is documented at Arpinum; the form of the goddess's name seems Etruscan. It appears that in historical times the cult had lost much of its original importance.
Furrina had a sacred grove on the Janiculum (present-day Villa Sciarra); in the imperial age Jupiter Heliopolitanus took possession of this place of worship; but here, together with the documents of the oriental cult, the only epigraphic documents of the cult of Furrina have come to light. The goddess's name here, however, appears in the plural (Forinac) and she is considered a nymph (nymphes Pharines). A passage of Cicero establishes an identity of Furrina with the Fury: and the comparison between two parallel passages of Plutarch and of Aurelius Victor which, referring to the same place, recall the one the Lepòv 2000 of the Erinyes and the other the lucus Forinac, seem to prove him right.
