FORTUNE. – An Italic and Roman goddess. Her three most important ancient centers of worship were Palestrina, Rome, and Anzio.
St. Jerome reports that FORTUNE, under Constantius, wrote commentaries on the Gospel "tituli ordered, brief and in rustic language" (De viris illustr., 97: PL 23, 735; cf. also in the introduction to the Gospel of Matthew: ibid., 26, 20); elsewhere he calls these commentaries "margarita de evangelio" (ibid., 22, p. 343). They have not yet been traced among the works attributed to him that have come down to us.
