FORCADE, THÉODORE-AUGUSTE. - Born at Versailles on March 2, 1816, died on September 12, 1885. Ordained a priest on March 16, 1830, he was appointed professor of philosophy at the major seminary of his diocese. On October 2, 1842, he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris, and on December 14 of the same year he set out for the Far East, where he was first procurator at Macao and then went to the Ryū Kyū archipelago in the hope of passing into Japan, where persecution was raging. On March 27, 1846, he was appointed vicar apostolic of the vicariate of Japan, recently erected, and was consecrated at Hong Kong on February 21, 1847. Since it was not possible for him to enter Japan, he returned to Europe, and in 1852 he resigned from the office of vicar apostolic, and on September 13, 1853, he became bishop of Guadalupe (French Antilles), from which on March 18, 1861, he was transferred to the see of Nevers, and finally on March 21, 1873, he was preconized archbishop of Aix-en-Provence.
