FORCADE, THÉODORE-AUGUSTE. – Born at Versailles on 2 March 1816, died on 12 September 1885. Ordained a priest on 16 March 1830, he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Major Seminary of his diocese. On 2 October 1842 he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris, and on 14 December of the same year departed for the Far East, where he was first procurator at Macao and then went to the Ryū Kyū archipelago in the hope of entering Japan, where persecution was raging. On 27 March 1846 he was appointed apostolic vicar of the newly established vicariate of Japan and was consecrated at Hong Kong on 21 February 1847. Since it was impossible for him to enter Japan, he returned to Europe; in 1852 he resigned the office of apostolic vicar, and on 13 September 1853 became bishop of Guadalupe (French Antilles), from which see he was transferred to the see of Nevers on 18 March 1861; finally, on 21 March 1873, he was preconized archbishop of Aix-en-Provence.
