FERREOL, JEAN-JOSEPH. - Born at Cucuron (Vaucluse) on 27 Dec. 1808, died on 3 Feb. 1853. Ordained a priest on 21 Dec. 1833, he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris on 23 Sept. 1838 and on 28 Apr. 1839 set out for Korea, then closed to foreigners. To reach his mission he crossed the whole of China on foot from Macao to Manchuria, where he learned of his appointment as vicar apostolic of Korea in place of Msgr. Imbert Laurent, martyred on 21 Sept. 1839. He was consecrated on 31 Dec. of the same year and, together with Andrew Kim, whom he had ordained, in July 1845 he embarked for Seoul, where he arrived on 12 Oct. For more than 7 years, amid persecutions, he traveled through the country, multiplying conversions and composing or correcting numerous works in Korean. Having died of exhaustion at Seoul, he was buried near the blessed Andrew Kim, martyred in 1846.
