FERREOL, Jean-Joseph. — Born at Cucuron (Vaucluse) on 27 Dec. 1808, died on 3 Feb. 1853. Ordained priest on 21 Dec. 1833, he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions in Paris on 23 Sept. 1838 and on 28 Apr. 1839 set out for Korea, then closed to foreigners. To reach his mission he crossed all of China on foot from Macao to Manchuria, where he learned of his appointment — Apostolic Vicar of Korea in place of Mgr. Imbert Laurent, martyred on 21 Sept. 1839. He was consecrated on 31 Dec. of the same year, and together with Andrew Kim, whom he had ordained, in July 1845 he embarked for Seoul, arriving there on 12 Oct. For more than seven years, amid persecutions, he traversed the country, multiplying conversions and composing or correcting numerous works in Korean. He died of exhaustion in Seoul and was buried near the blessed Andrew Kim, martyred in 1846.
