DUBOIS, JEAN-ANTOINE. - Born on 10 January 1766 at St-Remèze. Having entered the seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris and been ordained a priest in 1791, he set out on 29 January 1792 for Malabar (India). After a brief stay at Salem, he was sent (1792) to Mysore, where he brought many faithful who had apostatized back to the faith and also spread vaccination.

During that period he wrote his work Moeurs, institutions et cérémonies des peuples de l'Inde, which was published first in English (London 1817), then in French (Paris 1825) and in Spanish (1829), and went through many editions. Having returned to Paris, in 1819 he published the Letters on the state of Christianity in India (London 1832), which aroused a lively reaction in Protestant circles. He died in Paris on 17 February 1848.
