GARIN, MARCEL-ANDRÉ. – Born on 25 May 1854 at Marcury-Gemilly (Savoie), he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris on 19 August 1874 and, having been ordained a priest on 16 March 1878, departed on 16 April 1879 for the mission of Annam. In 1880 he founded a Christian community at Van-bam and secured many conversions.
He built and restored several churches, established a hospital and two agricultural settlements, and won everyone’s sympathy through the work he carried out on behalf of the victims of famine and flooding. When the persecution broke out in 1885, he refused the asylum offered him by a mandarin and remained among his Christians. On 18 July 1885 he was burned alive in the church of Phuong-chuoi together with a large number of Christians. Antonio Anoge
