GARIN, MARCEL-ANDRÉ. - Born on 25 May 1854 at Marcury-Gemilly (Savoie), he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris on 19 Aug. 1874 and, ordained a priest on 16 March 1878, departed on 16 Apr. 1879 for the mission of Annam. In 1880 he founded a Christian community at Van-bam and obtained many conversions.
He built and restored several churches, erected a hospital and two agricultural establishments, and won the sympathy of all for the work carried out in favor of the victims of the famine and of the flood. When the persecution of 1885 broke out, he refused the asylum offered him by a mandarin and remained among his Christians. On 18 July 1885 he was burned alive in the church of Phuong-chuoi together with a great number of Christians.
