DAVELUY, MARIE NICOLAS ANTOINE. — Born on 16 March 1818 at Amiens (France). Ordained a priest (1841), he entered (1843) the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris and in 1844 departed for Korea, where he arrived on 16 February 1846. In 1857 he was consecrated coadjutor bishop of Bishop Siméon Berneux. In 1861 he initiated a vast movement of conversions in the province of Kyeng-Syang. When persecution broke out in 1866, Bishop Berneux was killed, and D., who had become apostolic vicar of Korea, was in turn imprisoned and then beheaded on 30 March of the same year.
He composed a Latin-Korean dictionary and works on religion, listed in the Mémorial de la Société des missions étrangères (part 2, Paris 1916, pp. 174–75), written by A. Launay.
