DAVELUY, Marie Nicolas Antoine. — Born on 16 March 1818 at Amiens (France). Ordained a priest in 1841, he entered the Paris Foreign Missions Seminary in 1843 and in 1844 departed for Korea, where he arrived on 16 February 1846. In 1857 he was consecrated as coadjutor bishop to Msgr. Siméon Berneux. In 1861 he initiated a vast movement of conversions in the province of Kyeng-Syang. When persecution broke out in 1866, Msgr. Berneux was killed and D., having become apostolic vicar of Korea, was himself imprisoned and then beheaded on 30 March of the same year.
He composed a Latin-Korean dictionary and religious works, listed in the *Mémorial de la Société des missions étrangères* (2nd part, Paris 1916, pp. 174-75), written by A. Launay.
