FERREOLUS, Saint, Martyr. - At the beginning of the persecution of Diocletian he was a tribune of the army at Vienne (France), where he lived together with his friend Julian. Shortly after the latter's martyrdom, F. too was accused before the judge Crispinus; he attested to his Christian faith, and, having refused to renounce it, he was harshly tormented and then shut up in a narrow prison. He managed to escape, but was recaptured and beheaded. His body was buried in the same place as the martyrdom, on the banks of the Rhône, where a basilica was also built. The continual flooding of the river induced the bishop St. Mamertus (d. 473) to build another one in a safe place, to which the body of the martyr was also transferred. In the Hieronymian Martyrology he is commemorated on September 19.
