FERREOLUS, Saint. - Bishop of Uzès in Narbonensian Gaul after 552, d. January 4, 581. He labored much for the reform of the clergy, and extended his zeal also to the Jews residing in his diocese, seeking to convert them, which procured for him a three-year exile, imposed on him on the accusation of conspiring with them against the State.
Around 558 he founded a monastery, for which he wrote a Rule, Regula monasterii Ferriolacensis. In the 38 chapters of which it is composed, F. reveals a particular familiarity with the Rule of St. Caesarius of Arles and of St. Aurelian; indeed many of his prescriptions derive almost entirely from these.
This rule is to be remembered for the precision and exactness of its norms, and even more for the spirit of wisdom and discretion that animates it. In it F. demonstrates personal experience of the monastic life.
