GEBIZONE (EBIZONE) DI COLONIA

GEBIZONE (EBIZONE) OF COLOGNE. - Benedictine, born in Cologne, he went on pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Benedict on the advice of the Empress Agnes; he was received there as a monk by Abbot Desiderius in 1060.

A man of great abstinence and mortification, he lived in silence and solitude, devoted to continual prayer. He died on 21 October of one of the years between 1078 and 1087.

This G. has in the past been confused by some scholars with the namesake abbot of S. Alessio in Rome, later bishop of Cesena, who was sent to Croatia by Gregory VII for the coronation of King Zvonimir.
