FOSCARARI, Egidio. - Dominican bishop and theologian, born in Bologna on 27 January 1512, died in Rome on 23 December 1564. He entered religious life in Bologna on 14 March 1526, studied and taught for several years in his native city. Inquisitor and prior in Bologna (1546-47), master of the Sacred Palace (3 April 1547), he was later bishop of Modena (1550). An example to all of goodness and simplicity, he worked diligently to combat poverty and immorality. Falsely accused of heresy, he was imprisoned in Castel Sant’Angelo for several months (21 January – 18 August 1558). His full innocence was officially recognized only in 1560. He took part in the Council of Trent (1551-52; 1562-63), where he argued that the residence of bishops should be declared a divine precept. He served on the commission for compiling the Index, alongside other Dominicans (Marini and Forcino), and played a significant role in drafting the Roman Catechism and revising the Breviary and Missal.
