GERARDO d'ABBÉVILLE. - Master of theology in Paris already before 1257 and until his death in 1272. We have left of him sermons, Quaestiones disputatae, and 19 Quodlibeta (cod. Vat. lat. 1015 of the Vatican Library, and cod. lat. 16405 of the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris). He adhered to Augustinianism, as appears from the Quaestiones de cogitatione of ms. 177 of Bruges.
Along with William of St. Amour and Nicholas of Lisieux, he took part in the struggle against the Mendicant Orders, especially in the second period (1268-72), when he became the most authoritative leader of the party opposed to them. In 1269 he published the Contra adversarium perfectionis Christianae, which was refuted by St. Thomas, St. Bonaventure, and J. Peckam. The opponents of the Mendicants came to be called "Geraldi" or "Geraldini".
