GERARD OF ABBEVILLE. - Master of Theology at Paris already before 1257 and until his death in 1272. Surviving works include sermons, disputed questions, and 19 Quodlibeta (Vatican Library, cod. Vat. lat. 1015, and Bibliothèque nationale, Paris, cod. lat. 16405). He adhered to Augustinianism, as is evident from the Quaestiones de cogitatione in ms. 177 of Bruges.
Together with William of Saint-Amour and Nicholas of Lisieux, he took part in the struggle against the mendicant orders, especially during the second period (1268–72), when he became the most authoritative leader of the party opposed to them. In 1269 he published the *Contra adversarium perfectionis Christianae*, which was refuted by St Thomas Aquinas, St Bonaventure, and G. Peckham. The opponents of the mendicants came to be called “Geraldines” or “Geraldini.”
