GERARDO DA BOLOGNA

GERARD OF BOLOGNA. - Carmelite theologian, d. 1317. He was the first of his Order to obtain the mastership at the University of Paris, where he taught in 1307. Prior General (from 1297 until his death), he gave a strong scholastic direction to the whole Order.

He wrote much: a commentary on the Sentences, 4 quodlibets, ordinary questions on the virtues, and a Summa of theology that remained incomplete.

He follows an eclectic tendency with a marked preference for the intellectualism of Godfrey of Fontaines: this would be the characteristic of the Parisian Carmelite school down to John Baconthorp.
