FRANCIS OF SIENA. - Carmelite priest of the 14th century. While residing in Cremona, with apostolic vehemence and frankness he undertook to preach against the vice of blasphemy, for which he was killed by stoning by some ruffians who could not tolerate his zealous ministry.

A Sanctoral of the 14th century has preserved the following eulogy of him: "A man of great holiness, he died in the Convent of Cremona, where his body, glorious through many miracles that are written in his life, rests honorably." Since the 14th century the famous preacher of Cremona is often confused with Bl. Franco da Siena, a Carmelite layman, who, after being converted from a dissolute life that had contaminated his entire youth, ended his days amid harsh penances. In the city of Cremona F. is paid cult ab immemorabili and in 1925 a regular canonical process was instituted to obtain its confirmation from the Holy See.
