GEORGE AMI RUTZES. – Official (protovestiarites), at the court of the Emperor of Trebizond, DAVID (1458–62), and counsellor to the Byzantine emperor JOHN VIII Palaeologus at the Council of Florence. There he was a defender of the Union, indeed he made a profession of Catholic faith recently published by M. Jugie (v. BIBLICA). On his return to Trebizond he became a bitter opponent of Rome, as is attested in a letter to Demetrius, Duke of Nauplia (published by L. Mohler and later by M. Jugie [V. BIBLICA.]). After the Turkish conquest of Trebizond (1461) he showed little steadfastness of character, converting to Islam, to which he was also inclined by his private life of little edification. Some of his writings are still preserved, in addition to those already mentioned.
