GIORNALE ECCLESIASTICO DI ROMA. - Roman religious periodical begun on 2 July 1785; printed by Giovanni Zempel at S. Lucia della Tinta, it appeared on Saturdays in four pages. It had an annual index.
The G. E. aimed at a universal character, examining everything relating to the Church and ecclesiastical history, with news and critical expositions of all books published in Italy and abroad. A single topic could be continued over several issues.
On 17 February 1798 the G. E. was suspended on account of political events; it reappeared for one more year in 1825. The title page, adorned with symbolic illustrations, bore the imprint: “Roma presso Vincenzo Poggioli.” It had continuous pagination, indices, and bibliographical bulletins; in its final period it presented a somewhat different aspect. Its programme, already set forth in the preface, was directed against the anti-religious spirit of Voltaire and Rousseau, against Jansenism, and against other such critiques. First place was given to news from Rome, followed by Italian and foreign items.
The director of the G. E. was Fr. Gioacchino Ventura, procurator general of the Theatines.
The Supplement to the G. E. of R. completes the G. E., accompanying it from 1789 to 1798.
